Google is making a significant leadership change within its AI division. Sissie Hsiao, who has overseen the development and rollout of the Gemini app and led the speech division, is stepping down from her current role. However, she will remain at Google and transition to a new position following a short break, according to a report by Traffic lights.

Hsiao’s Journey and Impact

Hsiao joined Google in 2006 and has contributed to key projects like Search, Docs, Ads, and Analytics. In 2021, she took charge of Google Assistant, and later played a central role in developing Bard, which eventually merged into Gemini—Google’s generative AI platform.

Reflecting on her role, Hsiao described her leadership of the Gemini app as “Chapter 1,” signaling a new beginning as she hands over the reins.

Josh Woodward Steps In

Replacing Hsiao is Josh Woodward, currently a Vice President at Google Labs. Woodward has been deeply involved in experimental AI projects such as NotebookLM and Project Mariner, a browser-based AI agent. He will now oversee the Gemini app while continuing his work at Google Labs.

Strategic Shift at Google

This leadership change follows a broader reshuffle at Google aimed at enhancing AI innovation. In late 2024, the Gemini app was moved from the Search division to Google DeepMind, streamlining product development. Recently, Google also shifted its Project Astra AI assistant team under the Gemini umbrella to increase synergy across initiatives.

In another key addition, Google brought in a Vice President of Product from Meta, adding product development experience to strengthen Gemini’s global rollout and competitive positioning.

Looking Ahead

The Gemini app is central to Google’s AI strategy, competing directly with platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. With new leadership and a refined structure, Google aims to accelerate innovation and integration across its AI-driven tools.
