After almost eight years at Meta, Joelle Pineau, Vice President of AI Research, has announced her retirement. May 30, 2025, will be her final day.
Pineau became the leader of the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) division at Meta in 2023 after joining the company in 2017 to oversee the Montreal AI research lab. She helped create Meta’s Llama series of open-source big language models. In addition, she advanced machine learning frameworks like PyTorch and AI apps for image identification and voice translation.
With plans to spend between $60 billion and $65 billion on AI research this year, including building up data center infrastructure and adding 1.3 million graphics processing units (GPUs), her departure comes as Meta has stepped up its emphasis on AI. With companies like OpenAI and Anthropic competing with Meta, Pineau’s departure poses a leadership problem. A replacement has not yet been named by the firm.
Pineau did not reveal her future professional step, but she intends to pause and think before starting a new path.
