The voice at the end of episode six introduces us to Scott Glenn's character, Jim Hollinger – Sritala's (Lek Patravadi) husband and co-owner of the eponymous resort in Thailand. He's also the man who Rick (Walton Goggins) believes murdered his father, a revelation made during his mother's deathbed confession, reports the
In an interview with GQ about his role in The White Lotus, Glenn discussed how he was approached for the role and his decision to join the cast.
He remarked: "My agent called me up and said they were interested in my availability and said, 'If they offer you anything on the show, do it, because it's a phenomenon.'"
"And I thought, 'Yeah, OK.' So they sent me a description of an older guy who is laid up and walking with a cane. My first instinct was to get really pissed off because over the last five or six parts I've been offered (and did not do), four of them were guys dying of Alzheimer's, three of them had canes, one of them had a walker, and one of them was in an iron lung.
"I thought, 'OK, I know I'm old...' But I had just finished a film I love that's still looking for a home called Eugene the Marine, which was intensely physical. So I thought, let me watch the first season of White Lotus and see if that's something I want to do. And the minute I started watching it, I was seduced into what an unusual concept it was."
What unfolds when Rick finally confronts Sritala's husband? In the series, Goggins' character Rick has been eager to speak with Jim since discovering as a child that Jim allegedly murdered his father. The seventh episode sees Rick seizing his opportunity.
By deceiving former actress Sritala into believing she's being scouted for a movie role, "producer" Rick and "director" Frank (played by Sam Rockwell) find themselves at the grand residence of the hotel magnate, where she lives with her spouse.
Eager to confront Jim since the beginning of the third series, episode seven finally brings Rick to Bangkok. Leaving Sritala to "bond as artists" with Frank (who viewers may recall from his memorable four-minute monologue in episode five), Rick joins Jim (recovering from a stroke) in the den to "talk business", during which the hotel owner reveals he has two daughters.
Events quickly escalate from thereon – with Rick ultimately shedding his tourist guise and pointing a gun at the hotel tycoon's head. While it might have seemed that the American expat's (allegedly) murky past was catching up with him, the encounter surprisingly doesn't end in disaster.
In a moment of clarity, a frantic, gun-wielding Rick knocks over Jim in his chair and escapes the compound, leaving him sprawled helplessly on the floor — but not before letting his Thai bodyguards know that their employer had fallen. What follows is a night of debauchery for Rick, who finally gets his closure.
Scott Glenn is a familiar face in Hollywood. You might recognise him from cult classics like The Silence of the Lambs, the Bourne franchise, The Right Stuff, Vertical Limit, and The Hunt for Red October, as well as modern television hits like Marvel's Daredevil and The Defenders (where he plays Stick), Bad Monkey and The Leftovers.
With The White Lotus, Glenn adds another impressive credit to his already formidable portfolio.
Delving into his conversation with creator Mike White regarding his role on the show, Glenn disclosed: "I talked to Mike and I told him that I'm a very slow learner, so it's taken me almost 60 years to figure out how to do this [acting] stuff.
"I said, 'I'm at the point now when you say action, I'm not really sure what I'm going to do.' He said, 'That's great. I don't know what I'm going to do either.' He was so gracious and funny and fun on the phone. Plus, I've been to Thailand before and I love Thailand."
Reflecting on his enjoyable experience filming for the show, Glenn shared: "I pretty much jumped into it (filming). I mean, I knew a lot of the [actors] really well. It's like joining a circus being part of this show."
The White Lotus season 3 continues Sundays on HBO and the following Monday on Sky Go and NOW.
