Many people currently on Personal Independence Payments (PIP) are fretting over their eligibility for the benefit. The qualifying criteria will be due to shift next November.

The government says it is seeking to assist those at risk of losing their benefits. However, many are not making full use of their current entitlements, which could potentially offset any future losses.

Citizens Advice has put together a thorough list of extra help and support available to PIP recipients. This includes some that exceed the value of the actual benefit.

Benefit top-ups

If you're a PIP recipient also claiming other benefits, you might qualify for a top-up or disability premium. This boosts the amount you get from these other benefits without cutting into your PIP rate, reports .

This can include:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Employment and Support Allowance - but only if you get the PIP daily living component
  • Pension Credit - but only if you get the PIP daily living component

The exact premium you'll receive will hinge on your personal circumstances. This could vary from £42.50 for a single person on the standard disability premium to £163 per week for a couple both eligible for the severe disability premium.

Policy in Practice revealed that last year, £23 billion in benefits went unclaimed, largely because people aren't clued up about their rights. However, using a benefit calculator can ensure you're pocketing all the benefits you're entitled to.

Council tax discounts

If you're receiving either the daily living or mobility component of PIP, you might be eligible for a council tax reduction. The exact discount will hinge on various factors, including the specific rate of PIP you receive.

To apply, you'll need to get in touch with your local council and provide details of your PIP claim. You may also need to send them a copy of your award letter for verification.

Travel support

There are several support options available for disabled individuals using public transport. These include the Disabled Person's Railcard, which offers up to a third off rail fares.

Blue badges in England and Wales can ensure you have parking facilities when required. If you receive the mobility component of PIP, you may be eligible for a 50% or 100% discount on vehicle tax.

Some local councils also offer free local bus travel for PIP claimants.
