The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that on Tuesday, March 24, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred in Riverton, New Zealand. Ten kilometers off the southwest coast of the South Island, the earthquake was reported to have occurred. But there isn’t a tsunami warning in effect for the area.

This afternoon, an earthquake occurred off the lower South Island, prompting the issuance of an emergency mobile alert. According to Mark Mitchell, Minister of Emergency Management and Recovery, the South Island’s bottom was the target of the warning.

He wrote on X, “Evacuations are not necessary, but there may be danger close to the shoreline.” “We are requesting that people avoid the sea and the beach. Unusual and powerful currents might be encountered.
