A woman aged in her 70s was killed when she was struck by a lorry as police confirmed the victim died at the scene

The incident, involving a pedestrian and a lorry, was reported at 2.48am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 24 and 23. The victim died at the scene and the motorway was closed in both directions for several hours investigated the fatal accident, with the south now open. Officers are now appealing for witnesses who may have seen something to come forward and boost enquiries as the investigation continues.

A spokesman for Avon & Somerset Police said: "A woman has died after a collision on the M5 near Bridgwater this morning (23 March). The incident, involving a pedestrian and a lorry, was reported at 2.48am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 24 and 23.

"Officers, along with the ambulance and fire services attended. Despite the efforts of emergency services, sadly the woman, aged in her 70s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"Her next of kin has been informed and will be kept updated by officers. Our thoughts are with them.

"The motorway was closed in both directions while investigative enquiries were completed. The southbound carriageway reopened earlier this morning, however it remains closed northbound."

National Highways warned delays still exist in the area and drivers should allow extra journey time. They said on X: The M5 in Somerset has now reopened southbound between J23 (Dunball) and J24 (Bridgwater) following a serious collision.

"The northbound carriageway remains closed at this time. Continue to allow extra journey time if in the area this morning."
