Amit Gupta, an Indian national from Vadodara, Gujarat, who was unfairly jailed in Qatar for allegedly stealing data for which an inquiry is still underway, is receiving all the help India can provide, according to persons acquainted with the situation.

Amit Gupta is who?

According to his mother Pushpa Gupta, who spoke to the media in Vadodara, Gupta, a senior employee of the IT company Tech Mahindra, was arrested by Qatari police on January 1. According to Gupta’s father, state security in Qatar seized him.

According to the persons, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Indian embassy in Qatar is aware that Gupta is being held by Qatari police in connection with an ongoing investigation. Gupta has been wrongfully accused of data theft, and his family maintains that he is innocent. They have asked the Prime Minister’s Office to step in and demand his immediate release. One of the individuals said, “Our embassy continues to provide all possible assistance in the matter and is closely following the case,” without providing specifics about the investigation or the accusations made against Gupta.

According to the persons, the Embassy has maintained constant communication with Gupta’s family, his attorney, and Qatari officials. According to Gupta’s mother, she visited Qatar and had a meeting with the Indian ambassador there. According to the envoy she referenced, there has been no “positive response” to Gupta’s case so far.

Gupta, a Vadodara native, has been employed with Tech Mahindra in Qatar for the last ten years, BJP MP Hemang Joshi informed the reporters. Joshi said that Qatari security forces had arrested and brought him into prison. “His parents had gone to Qatar for a month and tried to meet him but they did not succeed,” the member of parliament for the BJP said.

The second time since 2022

This is the second time an Indian has been detained in Qatar since 2022. Eight former members of the Indian Navy, including commanders with significant decorations, were arrested in 2022 and were given death sentences in 2023. In February 2024, the Qatari Emir ordered their release after a Qatari court remitted their sentences.
