Sky Sports commentator Rod Studd did not hold back when calling Stephen Bunting's defeat to Chris Dobey on Thursday night. Bunting went into the match chasing his first Premier League Darts victory of the season, but things went wrong for 'The Bullet' yet again on a miserable night in Cardiff.
Seven weeks of action have now come and gone without a Bunting victory. He will have been eyeing up his meeting with Dobey as a prime opportunity to put things right, given that 'Hollywood' had lost his last five consecutive Premier League matches. It ended up being a struggle for both players, with nerves jangling as they attempted to claw their way towards the play-off spots.
Dobey averaged a mediocre 90.27 but still came away with a 6-2 win, with Bunting back on 87.05. And it wasn't just scoring that 'The Bullet' struggled with, as his doubling was also an issue throughout.
"This is like watching two blokes try to push custard uphill with a fork," said Studd. Dobey managed to steady his nerves before Bunting got his own in check, and as he pulled away, Studd came up with more cutting remarks.
"[Bunting] will be saying to himself, 'how many more mistakes am I going to make up here?'" he said on Sky Sports. "It's almost like a bingo card of blunders."
Studd's co-commentator, Mark Webster, also chimed in with: "There have been positives from some of his defeats, when he knew he played well against good opponents. He'll struggle to find positives here."
Bunting remains at the foot of the table, having lost all seven of his Premier League matches since returning to the competition for the first time in a decade. He is now five points adrift of Dobey and miles off the play-off pace with nine nights of action remaining in which to turn things around.
