The Importance of Curd in Indian Cuisine


Curd plays a vital role in Indian cooking, particularly in the summer months, as it supports digestion, enhances immunity, strengthens bones, and can even assist in weight management. While plain curd is incredibly beneficial, pairing it with certain foods can negatively impact both health and skin. Here are five food items that should be avoided when consuming curd.


1. Fruits

Fruits are generally nutritious, but mixing them with curd—especially acidic varieties like oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, or kiwis—can lead to digestive problems. Ayurveda suggests that combining curd with these fruits can disrupt digestion and may result in stomach discomfort.


2. Spicy Foods

Curd is known for its cooling properties, while spicy foods tend to generate heat in the stomach. Consuming both together can create an imbalance in the digestive system, potentially causing issues like indigestion, bloating, or acidity.


3. Fish

Ayurveda strongly recommends against the combination of curd and fish. The pairing of dairy with seafood can lead to digestive complications and may even trigger allergic reactions. To promote gut health, it's advisable to keep these foods separate.


4. Eggs

Both eggs and curd are excellent sources of protein, but eating them together can hinder digestion and result in bloating or discomfort. If you're on a high-protein diet, it's best to consume them at different times.


5. Tomatoes

Mixing curd with tomatoes is also not recommended, as it can cause indigestion, bloating, and gas. The acidity of tomatoes may interfere with the probiotic benefits of curd, negatively affecting gut health.
