presenter Mike Brewer has for less than £2,000. The host of the popular classic car restoration series selected a British icon as his pick, with the coming out on top.

Mike admitted he was a "huge fan" well under budget. The TV star has previously issued the advice on his , a forum where motorists can ask the car dealer anything they need to know. Helen from Leeds was among those who wrote in as she asked Mike what was the best option for her tight budget.

Helen asked: "Can I get a fun small car for £2,000? Unfortunately, it also needs to be comfortable on longer journeys and reasonably practical, so I guess a two-seater convertible is off the list."

Mike quickly responded: "I'm a huge fan of the classic Mini, but as you'll probably need something more modern my choice is still a MINI.

"That money will be enough to bag a decent Cooper from around 2006/07, and as long as it's been looked after properly, it should provide all the fun you need."

The model came in a range of different trims with anywhere from a 1.4-litre petrol model to a 2.0-litre diesel version available to purchase.

The 1.4-litre version was capable of 96bhp and could reach 0-60mph in 10.2 seconds. The vehicle was also fairly fuel-efficient with motorists able to reach a sizeable 52 miles per gallon.

AutoTrader, the new and used car marketplace, has 2006/07 MINI Hatch models priced around the £2,000 mark.

Some vehicles are on sale for just £999, while others have a price tag of over £3,000.

Other 'Ask Mike' tips have helped struggling road users identify their perfect vehicles at a certain budget.
