According to Dr Michelle Victor, health of the ovaries determines their normal physiological functioning, which includes production of eggs and reproductive hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.

The ovaries contribute towards menstruation, fertility and balanced hormones which help maintain an overall homeostasis within the body. Disruption to the ovaries can negatively impact the reproductive system, which may lead to ovarian cysts, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or in worse scenarios, ovarian cancer.

Why Do Ovaries Fail To Remain Healthy:

A combination of factors like hormonal imbalance, infections, environmental and genetic factors are responsible for causing issues with ovarian health.

  • Hormonal Imbalances: Hormonal fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone further impair ovarian function.
  • Lifestyle: Unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, tobacco and/or alcohol consumption have a negative relationship with ovarian health.
  • Medical issues:  Endometriosis and autoimmune diseases are known to cause ovarian damage.

Symptoms Of Ovarian Health Issues:

The symptoms can vary in every individual, however, the most common symptoms are

  • Irregular Menses: Bleeding is erratic and highly unpredictable.
  • Pain in Lower Abdomen: Pain can be chronic or cyclical.
  • Abdominal Bloating: Feeling of tightness or swelling in abdomen.
  • Unexplained Weight Changes: Gaining or losing weight without any activity or dietary changes.
  • Difficulty Getting Pregnant: Problems with conceiving may point to impaired ovarian activity.

When To Seek Medical Help:

  • Unexplained/chronic/severe pelvic pain.
  • Abnormal changes to the length and consistency of your period.
  • Failed attempts at conception.
  • Abnormal distension of the abdomen.
  • Changes in weight or appetite that are difficult to account for.

Seeking attention at the earliest in order to minimise the negative impact on ovarian well being is crucial. If you see these signs, make an appointment with a physician as soon as you can.

Tips To Promote Ovarian Health:

Focus on a diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fibre, fish, nuts and seeds that have high quantities of antioxidants, omega 3.

  • Maintain a healthy BMI: Being overweight or underweight has an impact on hormonal balance and ovulation.
  • Exercise on a regular basis: Catching a sweat helps balance out hormonal levels and enhances reproductive well being.
  • Reduce Tension: Unbalanced hormones because of stress can have a negative impact on the ovaries.
  • Processed foods: Minimise the quantity of processed foods and sugary beverages
