Tributes have been paid to Gabriel Popo after the Brazilian footballer tragically passed away at the age of 26.

Popo was due to play for XV de Jau against Uniao Suzano before suffering a medical emergency just before the game. Reports have said he was rushed to a hospital in Sao Paolo, but sadly died.

Popo's club confirmed his passing in a statement on , which reads: “It is with immeasurable pain and sadness that we announce the passing of athlete Gabriel Protasio, the Popo.

“The player was attended to in the accommodation and promptly taken to Santa Casa de Jau.

“In respect of this moment of mourning, and in a common agreement between the XV de Jau, Uniao Suzano and the Paulista Federation, the match has been canceled.

“In this moment of pain, we express our solidarity to Gabriel Popo's family, members of the club, friends and teammates. May his memory be honored and may we find the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”

One of Popo's former clubs, Santa Cruz, also released a statement acknowledging his untimely death. He played for the club in 2023.

“With deep regret, we mourn the passing of Gabriel Protasio Gomes, better known as Gabriel Popo, who defended the colours of Time do Povo in 2023,” Santa Cruz wrote on X.

"He left us due to a sudden illness, and his early departure leaves an immense void. Our condolences to his family, friends and especially to his daughter Mayla. May God comfort everyone in this time of pain.”
