Navi Mumbai: After issuing letters to property tax defaulters, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken severe measures against them, confiscating 128 properties and collecting Rs 7.48 crore from 30 defaulters who paid their debts. The government is working harder to guarantee that taxes are collected on schedule since property taxes are NMMC’s main source of financing for numerous municipal services.
Dr. Kailas Shinde, the municipal commissioner, has been keeping a careful eye on the campaign against defaulters. Major tax defaulters who disregarded several reminders were subject to property seizures as part of this campaign. As a result of their failure to reply to tax payment letters, three Ameya Co-operative Housing Society defaulters had their residences sealed.
Eight thousand significant defaulters who owing over Rs1 lakh in property taxes were discovered by NMMC. Seven days were allotted to them to pay their debts. However, according to Mr. Sharad Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of the Property Tax Department, 128 property owners disregarded the law, which resulted in the confiscation of their properties.
In light of this move, NMMC is already getting ready to cut off water supplies to housing societies that are still behind on their taxes. Additionally, the municipal corporation will auction off defaulters’ properties if they still fail to pay their debts after the property has been seized.
In order to support the growth of the city, Dr. Kailas Shinde has asked all property owners to make their tax payments on time and settle any unpaid balances. “Responsible taxpayers are essential to the upkeep and improvement of Navi Mumbai’s infrastructure, and property tax funds essential civic services,” he said.
It is anticipated that the crackdown would promote on-time tax payments and guarantee the financial stability of NMMC’s urban development initiatives.
