There are three cities in Asia all known by the same nickname - the Venice of India.

Alleppey, Srinagar and Udaipur are just three of over 40 cities in Asia that have been compared to the Italian city known for its open waters and winding canals.

Udaipur is a city in the state of Rajasthan, about 258 miles south of the state capital of Jaipur, in northwest India. It has a population of 475,000.

It is known as the City of Lakes because it is surrounded by five major artificial lakes. This has also prompted people to nickname it the Venice of India.

Besides lakes, Udaipur is known for its historic forts and palaces, museums, galleries, natural locations and gardens, architectural temples, as well as traditional fairs, festivals and structures.

Alappuzha, formerly known as Alleppey, is a town in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, south India. It has a population of 241,000.

In the 1700s, a port was constructed and canals for transport were laid throughout the city which experienced rapid development. Today, it is a prominent tourist destination due to the houseboats, which is what led to its nickname.

The backwaters and wetlands host thousands of migrant common teal, ducks and cormorants every year. The richness of the coastal waters causes a huge quantity of fish, crustaceans and turtles after the annual flood.

Srinagar is a city in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, north India. It has a population of 1.2 million.

It lies in the Kashmir Valley along the banks of the Jhelum River, and the shores of Dal Lake and Anchar Lakes, between the Hari Parbat and Shankaracharya hills, earning it it's nickname.

The city is known for its gardens, waterfronts and houseboats. It is also known for traditional handicrafts like the Kashmir shawl, papier-mâché, wood carving, carpet weaving, and jewel making.
