Swollen feet are a very common problem, often caused by excessive walking or standing. However, very few people know that anemia i.e. lack of blood in the body also causes swelling in the feet. Let us know from experts why feet swell due to lack of blood. Dr. P Venkata Krishnan, Sr. Consultants of Internal Medicine of Artemis Hospitals are giving information about this.

Why do feet swell due to lack of blood?

Experts say that deficiency of hemoglobin, called anemia, reduces the body's ability to deliver oxygen, which can lead to swelling in the legs, which we know as edema.
Let us tell you that hemoglobin is a protein found in blood cells and it transports oxygen from the lungs to different parts of the body. When hemoglobin levels decrease, body tissues do not receive enough oxygen. In this condition the body tries to accumulate fluids to compensate for the lack of oxygen to some extent, which can lead to swelling in the legs.

Lack of blood puts more pressure on the heart and kidneys. When there is less blood in the body, the heart has to work harder to pump blood because there is less oxygen in the blood. Additionally, the kidneys are not as efficient at filtering fluids properly. The result is that excess substances begin to accumulate in the body, which can cause swelling, especially in the legs.

Low hemoglobin levels can cause dilation of blood vessels. When blood vessels dilate, fluid leaks from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues, which can cause swelling. Experts say that swelling in legs is not only due to low hemoglobin but can also be due to many other reasons. Therefore, if you notice swelling in your feet, you should consult a doctor.

Other symptoms of low hemoglobin

  • Tiredness
  • weakness
  • difficulty breathing
  • pale face
  • cold hands and feet
