Indian Railway Ticket Booking: Traveling by Indian Railways is a common thing for millions of passengers of the country, but sometimes it happens that while traveling with family or friends, several tickets are booked on the same PNR number, some of these tickets get confirmed, while some remain in the waiting list. In such a situation, the question arises whether those whose tickets are on the waiting list will be able to travel on the train or not. Let us know what the rules of the railways say about this.
What is the meaning of PNR and Waiting Ticket?
PNR i.e. Passenger Name Record is a code that is saved in the train reservation system with the information of the train journey. When you book a ticket for a train, a PNR number is generated. There can be more than one passenger on this PNR number (PNR Inquiry), and the ticket of each passenger can be confirmed (Confirm train ticket) or on the waiting list (waitlisted tickets). What will happen if some passengers are confirmed and some have tickets on the waiting list?
What do the railway rules say?
According to the railway rules (Indian Railways Rules), tickets for 6 passengers can be booked on the same PNR number. If the tickets of some of those 6 passengers are confirmed, then the rest of the passengers who are on the waiting list can also travel. The point to be noted here is that if even one ticket is confirmed on a PNR number, then the rest of the passengers can also travel, even if their tickets are on the waiting list. But there is no guarantee of them getting a seat.
Money will be charged only if the seat is not confirmed.
If some tickets are confirmed on a single PNR number, some are RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) and some are on the waiting list, then all the passengers are allowed to travel. But passengers on the waiting list can get seats only if there is availability. Otherwise, they may have to travel in an inconvenient situation. Apart from this, there is no question of these passengers getting a refund. Since they are traveling, no refund is given.
Will you be able to travel without confirming your ticket?
Overall, if the tickets of some passengers on a PNR number are confirmed, then the rest of the passengers, whose tickets are on the waiting list, can also travel. However, their seats will not be confirmed and they can stand. If all the tickets are on the waiting list, then the entire PNR will be canceled and the passengers will get a refund. In this way, the railway system gives passengers a chance to travel, even if their tickets are not confirmed.
In other words, if some tickets are confirmed on the same PNR, then those on the waiting list can travel, but neither is there a guarantee of a seat nor will they get a refund. In such a situation, it is better not to travel in such a way to avoid inconvenience unless it is very necessary.
