New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Delhi) has emerged as the top Indian universities, as per the QS Asia University Rankings 2025. The premier institute with rank 44 has overtaken IIT Bombay which secured the 48th spot. The institute’s top rank can be attributed to significant factors like Citations Per Paper, International Research Network, International Recruitment Network and Papers per Faculty. At papers/ publications per faculty indicator, the institute scored 95.

IIT Delhi scored 75.4 in the academic reputation parameter and 95 out of 100 in employment reputation among Asian universities. Prof Vivek Buwa, Dean of Planning, IIT Delhi told TOI that the alumni network played a vital role in strengthening the reputation of the institute and there is a dedicated office focused on attracting leading global companies.

The institute obtained a score of 89 in the international research parameter. The institute is at present involved in around 116 research projects in partnership with universities world-wide. A total of six universities have bagged the top 100 spot in the QS Asia University Rankings 2025. IIT Delhi has secured 44th spot, IIT Bombay- Rank 48, IIT Madras- Rank 56.

QS Asia University Rankings 2024 vs 2025: Analysis of Indian institutes

IIT Bombay which secured 40th spot in the QS Asia University Rankings 2024 slipped to rank 48 in 2025. Other Indian institutes which slide down a bit are- IIT Madras from 53 to 56, IIT Kharagpur from 59 to 60, IISc Bengaluru from 58 to 62, IIT Kanpur from 63 to 67. IIT Delhi is the only Indian institute which improved its ranking from rank 46 in 2024 to 44 in 2025.

India shines in QS Asia University Ranking 2025

India has made a significant improvement in the education sector globally as evidenced by the QS World University Rankings 2025. A total of 46 institutions featured in the 2025 edition as compared to just 11 in 2015 edition. The country has the highest number of institutes in the latest rankings, with top 10 universities in South Asia. Apart from seven institutes in top 100, the institutes such as IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Chandigarh University (120), UPES (148), and Vellore Institute of Technology are in the top 150 list of QS Asia University Ranking.

The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) achieved the most notable improvement in QS Asia University Rankings, climbing 70 spots to 148th. The Delhi University has improved its rankings to 81st spot, up from rank 94 in the last year. A total of 15 universities scored above 99 per cent in the staff with PhD indicators.
