IRCTC’s New Policy
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced an updated travel insurance policy where passengers can now secure an insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh for only 45 paise per passenger. This low-cost insurance is optional at booking but will apply to all passengers traveling under the same PNR if chosen. The policy is available exclusively to Indian citizens booking through IRCTC’s e-ticketing platform.

Eligibility

The insurance is offered only to Indian citizens who book e-tickets directly through IRCTC. It excludes foreign nationals, passengers who book through travel agents, and children below five years old without a reserved seat. Children aged 5–11 years will be covered, regardless of whether they have a reserved seat.

Coverage and Benefits

The insurance provides extensive coverage, divided into four benefit categories:

  • Accidental Death: In case of a fatal accident during travel, the nominee will receive 100% of the insured amount, i.e., Rs 10 lakh.
  • Permanent Total Disability: Full coverage of Rs 10 lakh in cases of permanent total disability due to an accident.
  • Permanent Partial Disability: Up to Rs 7.5 lakh, providing 75% of the insurance amount.
  • Hospitalization Expenses: Medical expenses up to Rs 2 lakh in case of injury-related hospitalization.
  • Body Transfer Costs: Up to Rs 10,000 to cover the transfer of mortal remains.
Process for Claiming Insurance

After booking, passengers will receive an SMS and email with insurance details. They can view the policy number and additional information in their IRCTC booking history. Nominee information must be completed on the insurer’s website post-booking. If left blank, claims will be payable to legal heirs.

This updated policy provides greater financial security to passengers, offering affordable protection against accidents and unforeseen incidents during train journeys.
