Know what is the secret of this strange tradition

Here in Spain, the tradition of eating 12 grapes at 12 o’clock in the New Year is followed. In this country, the New Year is welcomed with this special tradition, especially on New Year’s night. According to tradition here, as soon as the clock strikes 12 at night, people eat 12 grapes one by one. Due to this it is called Las doce uvas de la suerte, which means the twelve grapes of good luck. The rule is very simple, which consists of eating one grape with each strike of the clock and finishing all the grapes in 12 seconds. Apart from this, it is also believed that 12 grapes symbolize the 12 months of the year.

These 12 symbols represent wishes for good luck, happiness, love and prosperity for each month. It is said that the person who eats 12 grapes regularly, his coming year becomes better and more efficient.

Know when it started

This tradition of eating grapes on New Year is believed to be from the year 1909 in Spain. It is said that during that time the production of grapes had become so high that farmers started finding it difficult to sell them. Then the grape farmer jokingly told the people to eat 12 grapes on New Year, good luck will come. This kind of prank has now become a tradition which is still played on the occasion of New Year in this country. In Spain, on New Year’s night, the sound of bells is heard on TV and the whole country is seen eating grapes together. Many people carry grapes with them even while celebrating on the streets. This tradition is so famous that before the New Year, special packets of 12 grapes are sold in the markets.

Do traditions follow in India also?

If we talk about this ancient tradition here, this tradition is being celebrated increasingly in India also. Here in many places, in parties on the night of 31st December, people decorate plates of grapes and wait for 12 o’clock. It is said that many people ask for a wish with every grape. Many people believe that the wish made in the mind with every grape is fulfilled in the coming year. For this reason, this tradition is not considered just a ritual but a celebration to the hope of the New Year.
