With summertime arriving and temperatures peaking, ants are becoming more active than ever as they prepare to invade homes in the hope of securing some much needed food and shelter.

This is a rather unpleasant experience for a large majority of homeowners who want nothing else but to keep these insects away from their kitchens, pantries and other living spaces.

But getting them out is thought of as quite the strenuous task, but it doesn't have to be-and don't worry about breaking the bank, buying the average supermarket's paint-by-numbers spray or powder, you may already have what's needed in your cupboard.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, there are more than 12,000 different species of ants worldwide, a vast majority harmless.

But that doesn't necessarily mean they don't pose a danger as they are known to carry bacteria, making them potential spreaders of disease or infection.

All you need to get rid is a kitchen staple that costs just pennies, and doesn't require a complicated process to administer - it's a no-brainer, really.

Black or red cayenne pepper is a natural ant deterrent because the insects find its scent irritating.

All you need to do is sprinkle some around baseboards and behind appliances, helping deliver an ant-free home.

You can get a 48g jar from Tesco and Asda for just £1, while Aldi's 36g alternative is far cheaper at 69p.

Other kitchen stapes you could include peppermint, tea tree oil, white vinegar, cornstarch, coffee grounds and even boiling water.
