A video capturing the Rath Yatra procession in Ahmedabad has gained significant attention online, showcasing elephants in distress as they broke away from their formation and dashed through the crowd, startled by the loud noises and chaos surrounding them. This event has reignited discussions about the ethical implications of using animals in large, high-pressure public gatherings.
Vantara, a wildlife conservation initiative supported by Anant Ambani, was among the first to respond. Their team, which includes wildlife veterinarians, mahouts, and additional support staff, quickly collaborated with local officials to provide immediate medical assistance, behavioral support, and relocation for the distressed elephants.
Dr. K Ramesh, Chief Conservator of Forest in Gujarat, remarked, "After the recent incident involving the elephants during the Rath Yatra, we contacted Vantara for urgent help. Their team promptly arrived from Jamnagar and worked with local authorities and animal handlers to facilitate the elephants' relocation for improved care."
The management of Jagannath Temple also recognized Vantara's efforts, with Trustee Mahendra Jha stating, "Vantara has shown remarkable dedication to ensuring these elephants receive the necessary medical care and rehabilitation they urgently require."
Eyewitness footage reveals the elephants appearing frightened and uncontrollable amidst the festive atmosphere. Many social media users voiced their outrage, calling for a more humane approach to the treatment of animals in such events. Comments included sentiments like, "This is distressing for those innocent animals, who are subjected to this cruelty," while others questioned the rationale behind using live elephants in events characterized by overwhelming crowds and noise.
Animal welfare advocates have long stressed the importance of rehabilitation facilities like Vantara, which provides permanent care for elephants rescued from exploitation.
