Daren Sammy Fined 15% And 1 Demerit Point by ICC: West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has been reprimanded by the ICC for his comments against third umpire Adrian Holdstock during the WI vs AUS 1st Test in Bridgetown.

Sammy has alleged bias by Holdstock against the West Indies, following a couple of controversial decisions he made during the West Indies’ first innings that went against the hosts.

Roston Chase’s lbw dismissal despite a clear inside edge and Shai Hope’s dismissal, even though the ball certainly brushed the ground as Alex Carey completed the catch, enraged Sammy. During Australia’s first innings, Holdstock has given Travis Head not out in a similar low catch taken by Hope.

In the press conference after day 2 of the Test match, Daren Sammy spoke against Holdstock, saying that his team is concerned about this particular umpire since their series against England.

After the first WI vs AUS Test, the ICC announced that Daren Sammy had copped a 15% fine of his match fee and also a demerit point for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The West Indies coach was found to have violated Article 2.7 of the Code, which relates to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an International Match or any Player, Player Support Personnel, Match Official or team participating in any International Match.”

The sanction, which was laid by Javagal Srinath of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, following the leveling of the charges from on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nitin Menon, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite, has been accepted by Sammy.

This is Daren Sammy’s first demerit point added to his disciplinary record in a 24-month period.

The hosts lost the WI vs AUS 1st Test by 159 runs, as Josh Hazlewood took a five-wicket haul in West Indies’ chase of 301. Travis Head was named the Man of the Match for his twin half-centuries in the game.

The WI vs AUS 2nd Test is scheduled to be played from July 3rd in St. George’s.
