New Delhi: The Telugu mythological release Kannappa was released in cinemas this Friday (June 27), with Vishnu Manchu taking on the titular role of the legendary Shiva devotee. Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, the movie reimagines the stirring tale of Kannappa Nayanar, one of the most beloved saints in the Saiva Siddhanta tradition, known for his raw and unflinching love for Lord Shiva.

The story of Kannappa’s unwavering devotion is offered not through hymns or scriptures but through instinct and love. The legend continues to be honoured at the Srikalahasteeswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh, where the Vayu Linga remains a site of deep reverence. What is the story behind Kannappa?

Based on the 7th-century legend, Kannappa recounts the extraordinary journey of Thinnan, a tribal hunter from the Chenchu community in ancient Andhra Pradesh. His life is marked by wilderness and survival. However, things take an unexpected turn when he encounters the Vayu Linga, an embodiment of Lord Shiva, in the forests near Srikalahasti. Though he had no formal knowledge of ritualistic worship, his offerings of water from his mouth and hunted meat were said to have been accepted by the deity, purely for their sincerity.

The legend reaches its peak when Thinnan is moved by the sight of the Linga bleeding from one eye. It is said that he sacrificed his own eye to heal the divine form. As the second eye began to bleed, he prepared to offer his remaining one. However, Lord Shiva intervenes and restores his vision and eventually grants him moksha (liberation). From that moment on, Thinnan was revered as Kannappa, one of Shiva’s 63 Nayanars.
