In light of the tragic incident involving Air India Flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which resulted in the loss of nearly 297 lives, N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, has addressed the growing concerns regarding flight cancellations and delays within the airline's domestic and international networks. Air India has been grappling with frequent flight disruptions, having canceled at least eight more domestic and international flights on Friday, citing 'increased maintenance and operational reasons.' This situation has escalated following the heightened regulatory scrutiny and ongoing safety investigations after the fatal Dreamliner crash on June 12, which claimed 270 lives.
On Friday, the international routes affected included AI906 (Dubai-Chennai), AI308 (Delhi-Melbourne), AI309 (Melbourne-Delhi), and AI2204 (Dubai-Hyderabad). The domestic flights canceled were AI874 (Pune-Delhi), AI456 (Ahmedabad-Delhi), and AI2872 (Hyderabad-Mumbai).
In his first detailed comments following the June 12 disaster, Chairman N. Chandrasekaran spoke to a private news organization about the ongoing operational disruptions. He reaffirmed Air India's unwavering commitment to safety, transparency, and long-term support for the families affected by the tragedy.
Chandrasekaran confirmed that the flight disruptions are directly linked to a fleet-wide safety audit initiated after the AI-171 accident, which involved the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. He stated, 'Since June 12, the DGCA has mandated checks for all 787s. We have completed inspections on 24 out of 33 aircraft,' emphasizing that these inspections are precautionary in nature.
He also clarified that the maintenance of Air India's Dreamliners is not conducted by Turkish Technic, as previously speculated, but by AIESL and SIA Engineering, both of which are reputable service partners.
While the investigation into the accident continues, Chandrasekaran insisted that the maintenance records for AI-171 were clear. He noted, 'There were no red flags or prior safety concerns. The right engine was replaced in March 2025, and the left engine was scheduled for inspection in December.' He reiterated that it would be premature to speculate on human error or technical failure until official conclusions are released by the accident investigation bureau and the DGCA.
Recent international airspace restrictions, particularly concerning Iran, have further complicated delays, forcing many long-haul flights to alter their routes, thereby increasing flight durations and operational complexities. Additionally, adverse weather conditions in certain regions of India have led to further flight cancellations.
Air India has assured affected passengers of full refunds or complimentary rescheduling. The airline stated, 'Our teams are working around the clock to assist with alternative arrangements. We apologize for the inconvenience caused.' Passengers are advised to check flight status on Air India's website or contact customer service at helpline numbers 011 69329333 or 011 69329999.
