Between rising pollution levels, dust-laden commutes, unhealthy diets, and a fast-paced lifestyle that leaves little room for self-care, our hair often takes the brunt of modern living. Frizz, dryness, hair fall, and lack of shine have become all too common, prompting many to revisit age-old home remedies for relief. Among the most enduring and talked-about natural treatments? The humble egg.
Egg yolks have been celebrated as a hair treatment for centuries, dating as far back as the 11th century. Packed with essential nutrients such as sulfur, proteins, healthy fats, and vitamins, eggs are believed to nourish the scalp, restore moisture, and promote softness. And even though science hasn’t definitively proven egg masks lead to hair growth, many swear by their results, especially for dry, dull, or damaged strands.
Why are eggs good for hair?
Rich in Protein and Sulfur:
Egg yolks are loaded with proteins, which are the building blocks of hair. Sulfur, found in high amounts in egg yolk, supports keratin production—a key component of strong, healthy strands.
Deep Moisture and Shine:
The healthy fats and lecithin in yolks help repair dry, brittle hair and add a natural shine. This makes eggs an excellent remedy for frizz and split ends.

Clarifies Oily Hair:
Egg whites, in particular, contain enzymes that help remove excess oil and product buildup from the scalp, leaving it cleaner and less greasy.
Supports Scalp Health:
Vitamins like niacin and riboflavin in eggs help nourish the scalp and promote a healthier environment for hair growth.
How to use egg masks for hair: Step-by-step routine
Classic whole egg hair mask (For Normal to Dry Hair)
Take two to three whole eggs and mix in a few drops of lemon juice to help neutralize the eggy smell. Mix the mixture until it turns frothy, and then apply it evenly to your scalp and hair using your hands to ensure complete coverage.
Once done, cover your head with a shower cap to prevent dripping and let the mask sit for about 20 minutes. During this time, the mixture will dry and feel slightly sticky. Rinse thoroughly with cool or cold water and follow up with a mild shampoo and conditioner as usual.
Hair masks for different types of hair
1. For dry hair:
For the nourishing version of the egg mask by mixing two egg yolks with one tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil and one tablespoon of honey. These added ingredients help deeply moisturize the hair and restore softness and elasticity.

2. For oily hair
For this type of hair use two egg whites and add a teaspoon of lemon juice. This mixture will help clarify the scalp and reduce buildup. Apply this to clean, damp hair, leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse off with cool water and follow with shampoo.
3. For frizz control and shine
For frizz control, blend one whole egg with a mashed ripe banana and a tablespoon of honey. The banana provides nutrients and moisture, while honey helps smooth the hair cuticle, making your hair softer and shinier.
Before applying anything to your body, it is important to do a patch test to ensure that you are not allergic to eggs or any of the ingredients involved. Further, it is also advised to always wash the hair with cold water and never with hot water as the eggs might clump and get stuck in the hair.
