New Delhi: Train passengers face problems when their ticket is in waiting list. In such cases, they don’t know whether to get ready for the journey or not. Because the final chart is made only 4 hours before the train leaves. Many people have to catch the train from far away, so they leave early. To avoid this confusion, you can find out the chance of ticket confirmation just after booking.

Usually, waiting goes up to 200–300 in trains. During festivals and holidays, waiting can reach up to 500. In such cases, the chance of confirmation is low. People who book tickets 60 days in advance cancel only if there is an emergency. But on normal days, around 26 percent of waiting tickets get confirmed.

This is how waiting tickets get confirmed

After getting a confirmed ticket, around 21 percent of passengers don’t travel. These people cancel their tickets. Also, after chart preparation, about 5 percent passengers don’t travel. Their seats remain empty. So, in total, 26 percent of people do not travel. Their seats go to people with waiting tickets.

How to calculate your chances

You can guess from your waiting number. In one Sleeper or Third AC coach, there are 72 seats. On average, 17–18 waiting list tickets per coach get confirmed. This means on normal days, waiting tickets up to 17–18 have a good chance to get confirmed, either as RAC or full seat.

How to know chances in the full train

Long-distance trains usually have 22–24 coaches. After removing engine and guard coaches, 4 are general coaches. About 8 coaches are Sleeper class. So, in Sleeper class, waiting tickets up to 75–80 can get confirmed easily. Right now, the chart is made 4 hours before departure. But Railways is planning to make it 24 hours before departure.
