Current COVID-19 Situation in India

As of June 1, 2025, India is experiencing a notable increase in COVID-19 infections, with active cases totaling 3,758. Kerala is the most affected state, reporting 1,400 active cases. Other states contributing significantly to the rise include Maharashtra with 485 cases, Delhi at 436, Gujarat with 320, and West Bengal recording 287. The daily case increases are particularly alarming in West Bengal (+82), Delhi (+61), Gujarat (+55), and Uttar Pradesh (+32), indicating ongoing transmission in densely populated regions. In the last 24 hours, the country has reported 363 new cases.

Health Ministry's Guidance

The central health ministry has urged the public to remain calm regarding the emergence of a new variant, which is a sub-variant of Omicron. Dr. Rajeev Bahl, the Director General of ICMR, stated that surveillance efforts are underway to understand the reasons behind the uptick in cases, and the government is taking necessary precautions. Four Omicron sub-variants have been identified: LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1, with ongoing testing of samples for further insights.

Rising Cases and Public Caution

Currently, India is witnessing a rapid escalation in COVID-19 cases across various states, primarily driven by Omicron sub-lineages. As the numbers continue to rise, authorities are emphasizing the need for caution, particularly in densely populated areas.

Recommended Precautions

Health experts recommend that individuals, especially the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems, should re-implement basic safety measures. These precautions include:

  • Wearing masks in crowded or poorly ventilated public spaces.

  • Maintaining hand hygiene by washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitizer.

  • Avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals.

  • Staying home when feeling unwell to curb further transmission.

  • Keeping up with vaccinations or boosters as advised by healthcare professionals, as vaccines remain effective against severe illness.

States are enhancing surveillance, increasing testing for symptomatic individuals, and ensuring healthcare facilities are ready for any potential surge in severe cases.
