During her recent speech at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Nicole Kidman revealed a private aspect of her creative process.
On Sunday, May 18, the 57-year-old actress was in France to speak with Variety’s Angelique Jackson before to Kering presented her with the esteemed Women in Motion Award.
Kidman said in the conversation that she often gets up in the middle of the night to write.
“I write at three in the morning. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “I wake up and I’ll write something, whether it’s a dream or something that’s going through my mind, my life, and my heart at the moment.”
“I think 2 and 3 a.m. is a very, very ripe time for things to happen because you’re in that slightly removed state from reality, but your dreams and your psyche are very, very there and very present,” she said.
Kidman said that she does not currently have any intentions to co-write a project, despite the fact that she writes often. She did, however, add, “I always say no and turn around and change my mind.”
Kidman wore a tight leather jacket and low-rise jeans in an all-black ensemble for the discussion. For the award ceremony, she later changed into a special red lace Balenciaga gown.
This year, the Oscar-winning actress’s picture was not shown at Cannes. She most recently made a comeback to her role in Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu, having previously been seen in the Prime Video film Holland. Her next appearance will be in Practical Magic 2, starring Sandra Bullock, which opens in cinemas on September 18, 2026.
