Shoppers using can take advantage of fuelling their cars with - but there is a catch. The benefit comes as a relief for many, as the cost of petrol and has been fluctuating over the years.

According to the, the average price of petrol and diesel fell by 2p a litre in April, but drivers are still paying too much for fuel. The RAC believes the average price of both petrol and diesel should be 4p lower than it is today - around 130p for unleaded, and 136p for diesel. This means drivers are losing out by more than £2 every time they have to fill up.

A full tank of unleaded for a typical family-sized car with a 55-litre tank now costs just under £74 (£73.76), while the diesel equivalent is £77.34. However, clever shoppers can smartly use their Nectar cards and not use their cash to make the payments.

One can redeem the Nectar points at Sainsbury's to buy fuel. But there is only one condition. The points cannot be used on fuel using a pay-at-the-pump. The shopper must swipe the card at the kiosk to redeem the points.

While explaining the terms and conditions, : "Points cannot be redeemed on fuel using pay at pump. To make a redemption on fuel, cards must be swiped at the kiosk."

The supermarket giant also explained that to redeem points at any store, one must be there once every 12 months with their Nectar cards.

It added: "If you haven't visited a store in over 12 months simply shop there again with your Nectar card and 24 hours later you'll be able to redeem your points there.

"Vouchers can only be redeemed in store at Sainsbury's and Sainsbury's petrol stations and must be presented at the till when paying for your purchases. Vouchers cannot be redeemed in Argos or Habitat."

Apart from this, if you have a Nectar card, you can redeem 300 Nectar points to receive 5p off per litre of fuel at Esso.

Nectar points issued on all transactions are capped at 100 points for unleaded and 250 points for diesel purchases and £200 for spend in shop.
