Newcastle are set to change their iconic club badge from the 2026-27 season and will consult their supporters to help forge a new crest. The side have worn the badge on their shirts for the last 37 years but feel it is time switch it for a more marketable design.

The current crest shows a coat of arms depicting two seahorses alongside a castle with the club's black and white colours in the middle and a flag at the top.

The design is a nod to one of the earliest variations of the badge from the early 1900s but released a statement this week, saying they wanted a symbol that could represent the club in the digital age.

They said its "intricate design" did not always translate well and that it was hard to reproduce consistently and now want a much sleeker look as Newcastle's profile continues to evolve.

"As our club grows on the global stage, the symbol that represents us needs to be able to keep pace. It needs to show up clearly and confidently across everything – from kits to screens to merchandise. So, we’ve been asking ourselves: how well does our current crest represent the club today? And how well will it serve us tomorrow? It’s time to update our crest.

"This isn’t a decision we take lightly. We love our crest. It’s iconic and has stood us through unforgettable triumphs and testing times. But it was created in a different era. Its intricate design doesn’t always translate well in today’s digital . And it’s difficult to reproduce it clearly and consistently.

"As football and the world changes, so too must the symbol that unites us. This isn’t about walking away from our past. It’s about carrying it forward with pride. The crest is part of our story. It’s on our shirts and inked in our skin. It deserves thoughtful evolution – shaped by the voices of the people who love it."

The reaction to the news has been mixed from fans, with some claiming there is nothing wrong with the current design - but admitting it could be modernised slightly.

One wrote on : "I feel like should stick with the same design but to modernise parts to make it much easier commercially If that was not viable, I feel like the club should revert back to an old design."

Another said: "Its got black and white on it. Says Newcastle United. Based on the actual city crest. The only logical thing to do is tidy the lion up on top. That’s it, our badge is perfect."

But others agreed it was time for an update, pointing out that the club has changed it in the past and that other teams have switched things up with positive results.

"I understand why people have such a connection to it but it looks so so old now," one said. "Like a knights crest of arms, even some of the old ones were more up to date than our current

A second added: "Listen, it makes sense - our badge is beautiful, iconic, but also complicated... Think about badges / logos like - simple, easy to recognise, easy to place on clothing and merchandising... It's progress and will put much needed revenue into the club's coffers!!
