Birdev's success journey: Each year, the UPSC Civil Services Examination introduces motivational tales of grit and resolve. One of them is Birdev Dhone, a resident of Yamage village in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, who secured 551st rank in the 2024 exam.

Birdev's academic excellence

Birdev's story is a test of resilience. Having grown up in a poor family, he grew up tending the family's sheep in the hills, more often than not learning under the open sky as there was no proper home to go back to. Despite all this, he did well academically, scoring the highest in the Murgud centre at Class 10 and the highest marks in the science stream at Class 12. He then did a graduate degree from Pune before shifting to Delhi to study for the UPSC exam.

Birdev's cleared UPSC

When the result was announced, Birdev was out grazing sheep at Belgaum, unaware of his success. A friend informed him, which was the result of four years of hard work and persistence. Despite having failed in his first two tries, his determination paid off in his third try. He is likely to be absorbed into the Indian Police Service (IPS).

Birdev's father's reaction

His father, Siddappa Dhone, was overwhelmed with pride at his son's achievement. Although not familiar with the nuances of civil services, he was aware of his son's hard work and commitment. The whole village of Yamage is set to celebrate Birdev's achievement, which is a testament to the power of education and perseverance.

Birdev's narrative is not simply about individual success; it is one of inspiration to thousands of others in similar difficult circumstances. His tale is evidence that through determined willpower and support, the most dire conditions can be transformed.
