A new message spreading across social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp is claiming that the Indian government is launching a scheme named "PM Modi AC Yojana 2025", which allegedly offers free 5-star air conditioners to 1.5 crore citizens. However, this viral post is nothing but a hoax, and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has officially debunked it.

🔍 The Fake Claim in Circulation

The message claims that the Ministry of Power has initiated a mega plan to distribute 1.5 crore air conditioners for free to Indian citizens starting May 2025. It also mentions that the government has already procured these AC units and is urging people to “apply immediately” through a given form link.

The post further encourages users to share it widely and follow a specific social media page for more updates.

⚠️ Reality Check by PIB

The PIB Fact Check team, which verifies viral news and government-related announcements, has categorically stated that no such scheme exists. There is no official announcement by the central government or any of its departments, including the Ministry of Power, regarding the distribution of free air conditioners.

Hence, this claim is completely false and should be disregarded.

🚨 Why This Hoax Is Dangerous

Scams like this aren’t just misleading—they're potentially harmful. These fake posts often contain links that redirect users to malicious websites that steal personal information like:

  • Bank account details

  • Aadhaar or PAN numbers

  • Mobile OTPs

  • Passwords and login credentials

Victims unknowingly provide this data, thinking they’re applying for a real scheme, which can result in financial fraud and identity theft.

🧠 What You Should Do
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious or unverified links.

  • Never share personal or banking details without verifying the legitimacy of the source.

  • Check such claims through PIB’s official Fact Check service or trusted government portals.

  • Report fake content on social media platforms to help others avoid falling into the same trap.

  • Educate your family members, especially senior citizens, who may be more vulnerable to such frauds.

  • 🛡️ Stay Informed, Stay Safe

This incident is another reminder that fake news spreads faster than facts, especially when disguised as government benefits. In the age of digital scams, it's vital to think twice before you click or share anything online.
