Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has announced several initiatives to strengthen the fisheries sector and improve the livelihoods of fishermen in the state.

Presenting the 2026–27 state budget, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the value of the free fishing equipment kit provided to fishermen will be increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000. The move is aimed at supporting fishing activities and improving productivity.

To promote biotechnology industries, new technologies and marine farming (mariculture), the government will establish a Centre of Excellence at the Fisheries College in Mangaluru.

The government has also proposed to set up Matsyadarshini outlets in Belagavi, Davanagere, Hubballi and Chikkamagaluru. These outlets will help promote fish consumption and ensure that the public gets clean and quality fish products.

In addition, new and well-equipped fish markets will be constructed in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Bagalkote districts to improve facilities for fish vendors and consumers.

The budget has also allocated Rs 20 crore for the maintenance of fisheries link roads across the state.

Highlighting the importance of inland fisheries for rural livelihoods and food security, the government said fishermen will be trained in modern fishing technologies. This will help increase fish production in rivers, lakes, farm ponds and reservoirs and provide stable income opportunities.
