The creator of Netflix's The Crown will override his own "20-year rule" if a reported upcoming episode is released, according to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams. It's claimed that Netflix has been involved in "advanced talks" with Peter Morgan to release a one-off episode detailing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's dramatic fall from grace.

The hit series has already spanned major events in the Royal Family's history, from Princess Elizabeth's marriage to Prince Philip in 1947 to the wedding of Charles and Camilla in 2005. The series, which ended in 2023, famously starred many popular actresses as the late Queen, including Claire Foy and Olivia Coleman.

Speaking of the potential upcoming episode, Mr Fitzwilliams looked back at a previous comment made by Morgan.

He told the Daily Express: "Reports that Netflix is engaged in talks with Peter Morgan, creator of The Crown, to revive the series for a special featuring the downfall of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor prove, if true, that the series is really about sensation."

The expert added: "Its creator, Peter Morgan, has talked about 'the 20-year rule' to maintain a 'dignified' distance from current events.

"Could this be the same person who 'wanted to remain a careful distance from where we are now', as he told The Hollywood Reporter?"

He also added: "Clearly, Morgan has been tempted by the deal offered by the streaming giant and has conveniently jettisoned his so-called rules.

"This episode, far from over, has indeed been excruciating for the Royal Family.

"We've already seen two dramatised versions of Andrew's infamous Newsnight interview. No doubt the audience will be huge, but the series's dramatised depictions of royal life, with superb production values, were essentially a knocking job."

Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office on February 19, which also happened to be his 66th birthday. The disgraced former prince was released later that evening under investigation.
