Monterrey CF, the first Liga MX team to compete in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, made a spectacular start to its campaign at the tournament. Facing 2025 Champions League finalist Inter Milan, Monterrey scored courtesy of former Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos.
The Mexican side took the lead in the 25th minute, when the experienced Spanish defender outmuscled Alessandro Bastoni, rose high, and buried the ball into the right corner following a brilliant corner ball from Oliver Torres. The goal showcased that Ramos still has the timing, strength, and aerial dominance despite being 39 years old.
Inter however hit back with a goal of their own courtesy of striker Lautaro Martinez. In the 66th minute, Carlos Augusto laid the ball for Martinez, finish it into an empty net and level the scores.
Inter and Monterrey face each other for first time
Monterrey had a rocky opening six months of the year, culminating in disappointing eliminations from both the Concacaf Champions Cup and the Clausura 2025 season, leading to the firing of former manager Martín Demichelis. Now, the two-time Club World Cup third-place finishers will look to have a strong performance in the summer tournament.
A couple of months ago, Inter Milan were dreaming of a treble-winning campaign. However, poor results in the home stretch of the season saw the Nerazzurri end the season without any trophies, leading to Simone Inzaghi leaving the club.Despite the disappointing end of the season, Inter are still one of the best clubs in the world and are among the favourites to lift the Club World Cup trophy
