Thiruvananthapuram, June 17: Renowned Sandalwood actor Darshan paid a spiritual visit to the ancient Kottiyoor Shiva Temple in Kerala along with his family. Known for its unique rituals and deep mythological significance, the temple is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva shrines in the region.

Located in the land of temples, the Kottiyoor temple holds great importance in Hindu mythology and is famous for its annual Vaishakha Mahotsavam — a grand festival that draws lakhs of devotees from across the country.

Mythological significance

As per Hindu legends, the temple stands at the site where Sati, the consort of Lord Shiva, self-immolated during the grand yagna conducted by her father Daksha, who intentionally did not invite Shiva. It is believed that the exact location of the yagna is where the Kottiyoor temple exists today. The Shiva Linga here is considered Swayambhu (self-manifested) and is uniquely placed atop river stones, offering a rare and divine sight.

The Vaishakha Mahotsavam begins with the Neyyattam ritual, where Lord Shiva is bathed in ghee (clarified butter), and concludes with the Elaneer Abhishekam (tender coconut water offering), performed with strict Vedic observances. The temple was renovated during the time of Adi Shankaracharya, who is also believed to have laid down the rituals followed during the festival.

Actor Darshan’s visit was seen as a moment of reverence, with devotees and temple authorities welcoming his presence during the sacred season.
